The Story

The Lady in White

The most frequently reported apparition at The Mermaid Inn is not connected to smugglers or swordsmen. She is a woman in white, seen independently in at least two of the inn’s rooms, and she is one of the reasons The Mermaid holds its reputation as one of the most haunted hotels in England. Her identity is unknown. Her appearances are quiet, undramatic, and entirely consistent across witnesses who have had no prior knowledge of each other’s experiences.

The Legend

A female figure dressed in white has been reported at The Mermaid Inn for many years. She appears in two distinct locations within the building. In Room 5, the Nutcracker Suite, she walks through the room and stoops at the foot of the bed, as though checking on whoever is sleeping there. In Room 1, known as the James room, she has been described as the Lady in White or sometimes the Lady in Grey, and she sits quietly by the fireplace. The two sightings may represent the same spirit or two different presences. The inn’s staff and management have acknowledged both.

Room 5 - The Nutcracker Suite

Guests staying in Room 5 have reported waking to find a woman in white moving through the room. She does not rush or startle. She walks with purpose, crossing the space before pausing at the foot of the bed, where she stoops as though looking down at the sleeper. The experience has been described by guests who were unaware of any haunting in the room. The figure does not speak and does not respond to the presence of the living. She completes her movement and is gone.

Room 1 - The James Room

The James room has produced a wider range of unexplained phenomena. The Lady in White, sometimes described as the Lady in Grey, has been seen sitting in the chair beside the fireplace. She appears composed and still, as though resting. Multiple guests have reported a second phenomenon in this room: clothing left on a chair has been found soaking wet with no identifiable source of water nearby. There is no leak, no condensation, no logical explanation for the dampness. The phenomenon has recurred with different guests over time.

In a separate incident in Room 1, a couple reported witnessing what appeared to be a family walking through a solid wall. The figures passed through the stonework as though a doorway existed where none does today, suggesting the room’s layout has changed since the period the apparitions inhabit.

Witness Accounts

The strength of the Lady in White reports lies in their consistency and independence. Guests in Room 5 and Room 1 have described near-identical experiences without prior knowledge of the haunting or of each other’s accounts. The figure is always female, always dressed in white or pale grey, and always calm. She does not interact with the living and shows no awareness of being observed. The wet clothing phenomenon in Room 1 has been reported by multiple guests across different stays, adding a physical dimension to what is otherwise a visual haunting.

Investigation and Evidence

The Lady in White is documented as part of The Mermaid Inn’s broader paranormal history. The inn was investigated by the television programme Most Haunted. While much of the inn’s reputation centres on the more dramatic events in Room 16 and the bar area, the Lady in White represents a quieter but equally persistent presence. Her appearances in two separate rooms suggest she is not confined to a single space, which is unusual for a residual haunting and may indicate an intelligent presence that moves through the building of its own volition.
