👻 Poltergeist 📅 1858 🏰 Francis Hotel

The Story

The Housekeeper

The Legend

The Francis Hotel occupies seven elegant Georgian townhouses on Queen Square, built between 1728 and 1736. Behind the Grade I listed façade, in rooms once reserved for domestic servants, a woman remains trapped in the misery that ended her life over 160 years ago.

The History

In 1858, a housekeeper employed at the property succumbed to what contemporary accounts described as persistent depression. She hanged herself somewhere within the upper floors of the building. The servants’ quarters of Georgian townhouses were typically located in the uppermost rooms, cramped spaces beneath the eaves where staff lived and worked in conditions far removed from the luxury enjoyed by guests below.

The Francis Hotel itself carries significant architectural importance. Historic England granted Grade I listed status to Nos.5-11 Queen Square on 12 June 1950, with the most recent amendment recorded on 15 October 2010. The buildings represent some of the finest early Georgian domestic architecture in Bath. Yet the grandeur of the property stands in stark contrast to the fate of the woman who once maintained it.

The Hauntings

The housekeeper’s presence manifests primarily through poltergeist activity concentrated in guest bedrooms and the upper floors where servants once worked. Guests report being kept awake throughout the night by persistent scratching and tapping emanating from inside their rooms. The sounds have no identifiable source.

One documented incident involved a hot water bottle being swept violently from a bedside table. The guest witnessed the object flung across the room by an unseen force. Cold drafts accompany the disturbances, and an oppressive feeling of another presence fills the space.

Witness Accounts

Cleaning staff have encountered the housekeeper directly. Multiple reports describe a figure sitting on beds in guest rooms. The apparition appears solid enough to be mistaken momentarily for a living person before vanishing.

On 3rd and 4th January 2013, specific incidents were documented in paranormal records, confirming the haunting’s continuation into the modern era. Guests during this period reported the full range of phenomena associated with the housekeeper: the scratching, the tapping, the unmistakable sense that someone occupied the room alongside them.

The pattern of activity suggests an intelligent haunting rather than a simple residual replay. The housekeeper responds to the presence of others. She makes herself known. Whether through resentment, despair, or an inability to move beyond her final moments, she remains bound to the place where she spent her working life and chose to end it.

Investigation and Evidence

The Francis Hotel features in the Paranormal Database’s Somerset and Bristol records, which catalogue the housekeeper entry alongside multiple witness statements. Bath Spa University news coverage and Visit Bath tourism guides both acknowledge the haunting as part of the city’s supernatural heritage.

No formal televised paranormal investigation has been publicly documented at the hotel. The evidence rests primarily on the accumulation of guest and staff testimonials spanning decades. The consistency of reports, from the specific nature of the sounds to the location of sightings, lends credibility to the accounts. The housekeeper does not appear in grand spectral fashion. She scratches. She taps. She sits quietly on freshly made beds. And then she is gone.
