The Story

The Edwardian Girl

The Legend

In a bedroom within the oldest part of Alveston Manor, a young girl stands at the foot of the bed. She wears a pale dress, her clothing unmistakably from the early 1900s. For a moment, she looks real enough to be a lost guest. Then she is gone. This is the most persistent ghost at Alveston Manor, a child from the Edwardian era who, according to paranormal accounts, died within these walls and never left.

The History

The Paranormal Database records that the girl died during a party held at the manor during the Edwardian period, sometime between 1901 and 1910. No primary historical documentation of the death has been found, and the precise circumstances remain unclear. Edwardian house parties were grand affairs, drawing guests to country properties for days at a time, and the manor, with its Tudor grandeur and sweeping grounds beside the River Avon, would have been a fitting venue for such gatherings.

The building’s Elizabethan staircases, uneven Tudor floors, and the general hazards of a centuries-old structure meant that accidents were a genuine risk. Disease could also have struck suddenly in an era before modern medicine. What the paranormal record preserves is the report of a child’s continuing presence in the building long after the Edwardian period ended.

The Hauntings

The girl’s apparition appears in a specific bedroom within the older section of the hotel. She materialises near the foot of the bed or by the window, standing still and watching. Guests who have seen her describe a figure solid enough to mistake for a real person. Her dress is white or pale, cut in the style worn by children of comfortable families in the early 1900s. The sightings end without transition. She does not fade or walk away. She is simply no longer there.

The Paranormal Database describes her as appearing “to shock visitors,” suggesting the encounters are sudden and startling rather than gradual. The haunting appears to be concentrated in a single room rather than spread across the building.

Witness Accounts

Guests have described waking to find the figure standing in the room, initially mistaking her for a real person before recognising that her clothing belongs to another era. The consistency of the descriptions, a young girl in Edwardian dress, the same bedroom, the sudden appearance and disappearance, has been noted across independent accounts from guests who had no prior knowledge of the room’s reputation.

Investigation and Evidence

The Paranormal Database lists the Edwardian girl as the primary haunting at Alveston Manor, describing “a young spirit who died in the building during an Edwardian party.” Mysterious Britain documented the same haunting, cross-referencing the Paranormal Database entry with the manor’s architectural history. Coventry Live included Alveston Manor in a feature on the most haunted locations in Coventry and Warwickshire, noting the Edwardian girl ghost.

The manor’s documented history, confirmed by the Victoria County History’s 1945 architectural survey, establishes that the building was a substantial private residence during the Edwardian period, consistent with the kind of property where house parties took place.
