Amersham Haunted Hotel

The Chequers, Amersham, Buckinghamshire Poltergeist Medieval

The Chequers in Amersham is a hotel with a reputation for paranormal activity. Moaning and screaming have been heard, and a white hooded figure, a woman in white, and a phantom chimney sweep have been reported. One room is no longer let to guests due to the frequent visits of a white hooded woman who is seen gazing out of the window. Guests and staff have experienced cold spots, and the sensation of being tapped or brushed by an invisible presence. CCTV cameras have captured an exploding glass and a dissolving salad bowl. The hotel's atmosphere is reportedly unpleasant for dogs.

The hauntings at The Chequers may be attributed to the fact that six Lollard martyrs were imprisoned there in 1521, the night before their execution by burning in Rectory Woods. These individuals preached sermons deemed heretical by the mainstream church. The gaoler, Osman, has also been seen in the bar near the fireplace, wearing a cloak. In total, there are said to be as many as nine ghosts in this building. The Chequers has been exorcised at least three times, but the paranormal activity continues.

Historical Context

The Chequers has a history dating back to the 16th century, when it was used to imprison Lollard martyrs before their execution.
