Corpus Christi College Ghost
Corpus Christi College in Cambridge is home to a rather unsettling ghost story. It's said that Doctor Butts, a former member of the college, took his own life in 1632 by hanging himself in his room. Butts had been struggling with what we now recognise as depression. Since then, he's been seen wandering the college grounds, dressed in white, with long hair and a noticeable gash around his neck. The story goes that an exorcism was attempted to rid the college of his spirit, but unfortunately, it didn't work.
The events surrounding Doctor Butts' death are well-documented. On Easter Sunday 1632, his lifeless body was found hanging by his garters in his room. Fast forward to the early 20th century, and reports of his ghostly apparition began to surface. The ghost has been described as a tall figure in white, with long hair and a dark mark around his neck. Interestingly, there's also a story about the lover of Dr Spencer's daughter, who allegedly suffocated in a cupboard in the college kitchen while hiding from Doctor Butts. It's said that this lover's spirit also haunts the college.
The college was founded in 1517 by Richard Fox, the Bishop of Winchester.
