Matlock Ghostly Horseman

Bakewell Road, Matlock, Derbyshire Apparition Victorian

Bakewell Road in Matlock can be a pretty ordinary place, but on certain nights it seems to play host to a rather extraordinary apparition. In February 2001, a woman driving along this street reported seeing a dark figure on horseback. He was a tall, imposing figure dressed in a long cape, with a large floppy hat pulled low over his face, making it difficult to discern any defining features. The image was fleeting, but certainly vivid enough to leave a lasting impression on the witness.

Historical records for the Railway Hotel and surrounding areas dont reveal much about a ghostly horseman, but the Victorian era was a time of great change and upheaval in Matlock, with the construction of the railway and growth of industry. While we cant pinpoint an exact connection, its possible that the apparition is linked to this period of transformation. The witness account remains one of the most compelling, with no obvious explanation for what she saw. The fact that she was driving and the vision was brief suggests it wasnt a hallucination, but something external.

Historical Context

The Railway Hotel was built during the Victorian era, a time of significant growth for Matlock
