Faceless Woman of Cairnsmore
Cairnsmore manor house, Newton Stewart
Cairnsmore Manor House stands eerily on the outskirts of Newton Stewart, its grandeur slowly being reclaimed by nature. It's here that two builders, finishing up a month-long contract in November 1956, stumbled upon something inexplicable. As they were leaving, they heard a continuous heavy rumbling from the upper floor, prompting them to rush upstairs, fearing part of the old manse had collapsed. But when they reached the first floor, the noise stopped abruptly. What they glimpsed next sent shivers down their spines - a woman in a long, dark dress who vanished into thin air. Not wanting to lock up the house with someone - or something - inside, they searched for her and found her in the attic; her grey, featureless face sent them running for the door.
