Bell's Wynd, Edinburgh

Bell's Wynd in Edinburgh's Old Town has a dark and intriguing history, centred around the tragic tale of Mrs Guthrie. Her body lay undiscovered in a room along this narrow alleyway for an astonishing 21 years. It was only when a curious locksmith broke in, wondering why the flat was not being used, that her presence was finally acknowledged. As he entered, Mrs Guthrie's ghost manifested itself to him, a haunting apparition that would go on to appear along the Wynd for many years after her body was finally removed.

Large house to the north of Balcarres Street, Edinburgh

This grand house on the outskirts of Edinburgh's city centre has borne witness to a tragic tale of love, betrayal, and murder. In the 1720s, Elizabeth Elphinstone met a gruesome end at the hands of her husband, who stabbed her through the heart after discovering her in a compromising position with his son from a previous marriage. The house has been haunted by Elizabeth's ghost ever since, until her stepson's death brought an end to the spiritual activity.

Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh

Deep in Edinburgh's financial district, a chilling poltergeist encounter took place at the Bank of Scotland on George Street. Two cleaners working late one night were abruptly interrupted by a series of inexplicable events. Disembodied footsteps echoed through the empty corridors, doors creaked open and shut on their own, and a room grew unnaturally cold. The chill was so intense that one of the cleaners could see their breath misting in the air. A door that only they could access had been deadbolted, with no one recalling touching it. The cleaners swiftly left the site, shaken by the experience.

Calton Hill, Edinburgh

Calton Hill, a spot steeped in history and folklore, is said to be home to a mystical fairy gateway. Legend has it that back in the seventeenth century, this enchanted portal swung open, providing a passage to France, Holland, and the fairy kingdom. Only those blessed with second sight could supposedly see and use this mythical entrance. A young lad claimed to have had access to the gate and would act as a drummer for the many fairies who used the portal. His story is a curious one, and it ends with him slipping away from his wardens to meet the little people, never to be seen again.

York Place, Edinburgh

York Place in Edinburgh's city centre is home to a rather unusual office ghost. A witness working in one of the offices here reported hearing a young child humming a tune coming from the basement. Curious, they investigated but could find no one there. The humming noise was quite distinct and seemed to be a gentle, soothing melody. It's unclear what might have caused this strange occurrence, but it's certainly a peculiar experience for anyone working in the building.

Lauriston Place, Edinburgh

Lauriston Place in Edinburgh is home to a rather intriguing ghost story. This old fire station, now converted, has been the site of numerous paranormal sightings and experiences. Staff have reported seeing a ghostly dark figure wearing an old-style fire uniform, normally appearing at night. Footsteps have been heard in various parts of the building when it's known there's no one else on duty. It's as if the spirit of an old fireman still lingers, going about his business long after his passing.
