Healing Water Legend
Dhu Loch, also known as Black Loch, is a mystical spot in Drumlanrig where locals believed the water had healing properties. To harness this power, a specific ritual had to be followed. A person would have to throw an article of clothing from the sick individual into the loch over their left shoulder. Only then could they scoop up water into a vessel, being careful not to let it touch the ground. The person carrying the water had to turn away from the loch in a sun-wise direction and not look back or speak to anyone until they reached the sick person's home.
This ancient ritual dates back to nineteenth century beliefs in the Lowlands. The process was steeped in tradition and required great care to execute correctly. It's said that failure to follow the ritual might have resulted in the water losing its healing properties. While there's no concrete evidence of the water's effectiveness, the legend has endured, captivating those interested in the paranormal and folklore of the region.
