Caythorpe Grey Lady Ghost
Holy Cross House in Caythorpe, Lincolnshire, was once home to a rather unsettling presence. An older lady, described as the Grey Lady, was seen gliding along a corridor by one witness, before vanishing into a bedroom. This eerie apparition was not the only strange occurrence at the house. Disembodied footsteps and other unexplained noises would echo through the halls after dark, leaving residents and visitors alike with a sense of unease.
The history of the Grey Lady is shrouded in mystery, with two possible stories behind her identity. One claims she was Mrs Bowling, a woman who was brutally murdered in a bedroom during the mid-nineteenth century. Another legend suggests she was a woman who refused to help with the Gunpowder Plot, and was subsequently killed to ensure her silence. Although Holy Cross House was demolished in October 1966, the legend of the Grey Lady lives on, a chilling reminder of the house's dark past.
The house was a farmhouse dating back to the 19th century.
