A military officer, with a penchant for violence, murdered a local priest and shortly after met his own demise when his horse threw him into a swollen river. The soldiers, in a rush to bury the officer, laid him to rest in the closest graveyard, which happened to be Loughane. However, it seems the locals who had passed on weren't too keen on sharing their final resting place with a murderer. The following night, the deceased rose from their graves, grabbed their headstones, and made their way across the River Shournagh to rebury themselves in what is now Mathey graveyard.
