Ghost of Grace Darling

Longstone Lighthouse, Farne Islands, Northumberland Apparition Victorian

Perched on the rugged Farne Islands, the Longstone Lighthouse has been a beacon of safety for mariners since its construction. But it's not just the stunning views and architectural grandeur that draw visitors to this remote outpost - a reported ghostly presence has piqued the interest of many. In 1976, two keepers claimed to have heard the sound of footsteps coming from the engine room and the tower, believed to be the restless spirit of Grace Darling, the legendary lighthouse keeper's daughter who saved nine lives in a daring rescue during the 19th century.

The story of Grace Darling is one of bravery and selflessness. Born in 1815, she became a local hero after helping her father rescue the survivors of a stricken steamer in 1838. Tragically, her life was cut short when she died of pneumonia in 1819, at just four years old. Fast forward to the 1970s, and the Longstone Lighthouse was still manned by keepers, who began reporting strange occurrences. The ghostly footsteps and unexplained noises were attributed to Grace's spirit, which seemed to be still roaming the lighthouse, perhaps re-enacting her famous rescue or simply unable to rest. With the lighthouse becoming fully automated in 1990, it's unclear whether Grace's spirit remains, but her legacy lives on.

Historical Context

The Longstone Lighthouse was built in 1826 to aid navigation in the treacherous waters around the Farne Islands.
