Bleeding Builder of Plaish Hall
Plaish Hall in Cardington, Shropshire, is home to a rather gruesome ghost story. Legend has it that a builder was sentenced to death by Judge Leighton, but the judge offered to lessen the punishment if the man helped build a new chimney stack on his roof. The builder agreed, but after completing the work, the judge hanged him from the chimney and entombed his corpse within it. Since then, the chimney has been known to drip blood, and the ghost of the builder, sometimes accompanied by an unknown woman, has been spotted walking the hall.
This tragic event is said to have occurred in the 17th or 18th century, a time when the English justice system was often harsh and unforgiving. Another legend attached to Plaish Hall tells the story of a group of clergymen who met to play cards one night, only to be interrupted by the devil himself. All but one man ran away, and a large blood stain was later found on the floor, which could never be washed away. These dark events are said to occur on stormy nights, adding to the eerie atmosphere of the hall.
Plaish Hall dates back to the 16th century, with various additions and renovations over the centuries.
