The Phantom Lady of Chew Valley Lake

Chew Valley Lake, Moreton, Somerset Apparition Pre-Victorian

Chew Valley Lake, a peaceful spot in Somerset, is home to a rather unsettling ghostly apparition. On the evening of 5 June 1999, a driver and two passengers were driving along the B3114 road when they spotted a lady who seemed to appear out of nowhere, in the middle of the road. She had long, wet, wavy hair and was dressed in old-fashioned attire. The driver, understandably shaken, pulled into a nearby pub and called the police. What's fascinating is that this wasn't an isolated incident - the driver later attended a historical/paranormal meeting where around twelve other people claimed to have seen the same ghostly woman.

Interestingly, one witness believes that the ghost could be Catherine, a woman who drowned near the site before the lake was created. This theory adds a layer of tragedy to the haunting. The ghostly lady has been described as drifting across the road, giving the impression that she's trying to cross, but doesn't seem to interact with the living. Multiple witnesses have come forward with similar descriptions, lending credibility to the sightings. While we can't say for certain who Catherine is or what her story is, it's clear that her presence is felt by those who visit Chew Valley Lake.

Historical Context

The lake was created after a local valley was flooded, submerging several villages and farmland.
