Phantom Box Carriage Hogs Back

Hogs Back, A31, Surrey Apparition Victorian

On a drizzly evening in January 2007, a driver travelling home along the A31 near Hogs Back caught a glimpse of a horse-drawn box carriage crossing the road about 100 metres ahead. The rain was coming down heavily, limiting visibility, but the driver noticed a dim lantern at the front of the carriage. As he reached the spot where the carriage had seemingly passed, he realised there was no side road for it to have turned into. This strange encounter wasn't an isolated incident; similar sightings had been reported in the area decades earlier.

Digging deeper into the history of these sightings, we find that in the 1960s, another witness reported seeing a female figure with long hair, clad in a white dress, standing by the roadside. When the witness stopped to offer assistance, the figure vanished into thin air. What's intriguing is that when this witness shared their experience with a colleague the next day, they were told that the area was known to be haunted. These accounts, separated by years, share a common thread of unexplained phenomena, leaving us to ponder the connection between them.
