Lady Wintour's Ghostly Apparition

Huddington Court, Huddington, Hereford Apparition Jacobean

Huddington Court in Herefordshire is home to a rather mournful presence. Lady Wintour's ghost is said to appear once a year on 31 January, still grieving the loss of her husband Robert Wintour, who was executed on this very date in 1606 for his part in the infamous Gunpowder Plot. But that's not the only time she's been spotted - a couple driving past the court one November evening caught a glimpse of a woman in a cloak on a bike, who vanished into thin air as they drew closer.

The story of Lady Wintour's beheading and subsequent haunting has been passed down through the years. Her husband's involvement in the Gunpowder Plot led to his tragic demise, and it's said that Lady Wintour's spirit still roams the lanes, searching for him. On one occasion, a couple stopped at a nearby pub, visibly shaken by their encounter with the ghostly Lady Wintour. The landlord, familiar with the legend, guessed that they had crossed paths with the restless spirit, who was known to glide down the lane.
