Burning Organ Poltergeist

Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Colne, Lancashire Poltergeist Victorian

Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Colne, Lancashire, is home to a rather unusual and destructive poltergeist story. Services at the church had ceased after it amalgamated with another church, but that didnt stop strange occurrences. People would still see lights and hear the church organ playing. It was as if the church wasnt ready to be quiet just yet. Things took a turn for the worse when a fire broke out, destroying the organ and pulpit. The police got involved, and they were stumped. It was clear that something was amiss, but what?

The events at Mount Zion United Methodist Church happened back in late June or early July 1951. This was a time when the church was still relatively new, having been built in the 19th century as part of the growing Methodist movement in the area. The churchs history is tied closely to the industrial and social changes in Colne during the Victorian era. The poltergeist activity, characterised by unexplained fires and organ music, seemed to be a manifestation of some sort of unrest or anger. The fact that the church was no longer in use might have contributed to the intensity of the haunting. Its worth noting that the police investigation into the fire was unable to determine the cause, adding to the mystery.

Historical Context

The church was built in the 19th century as part of the Methodist movement in the area.

Birkdale Ghostly Elevator

Palace Hotel, Birkdale

The Palace Hotel in Birkdale was once a hub of ghostly activity, particularly during its demolition in April 1969. The hotel's lift would move on its own, defying the fact that all power had been cut to the building. It was as if the lift had a mind of its own, refusing to budge when people needed it to, yet springing to life when no one was around. This strange behaviour was attributed to the ghost of the hotel's designer, who had a tragic end. According to reports, he leapt from the roof after discovering that the hotel had been built facing the wrong way, a mistake that must have been agonising for a man who had poured his heart and soul into the project.
