The Black Horse Inn in West Boldon is home to a rather intriguing haunting. A man dressed in seventeenth century attire complete with a wide-brimmed hat has been spotted in the bar area. He was so convincing that a manager once mistook him for a real person. This ghostly gentleman appears to be a regular presence but the exact timing of his appearances is unknown. The atmosphere at the Black Horse Inn must be quite welcoming for this phantom to linger.

Further adding to the mystery of the Black Horse Inn are reports of a phantom nine year old girl. She may be connected to a disembodied voice that has been heard within the premises. While the exact historical period of these hauntings is unclear it seems likely that they date back to the seventeenth century given the man's clothing. The Black Horse Inn has clearly got a rich history and it seems that some of its past residents have chosen not to leave.
