The Resident Spirits
Despite its 20th-century build, the inn is reportedly haunted by spirits from different eras: a young woman whose soft, feminine laughter is heard throughout the inn, particularly in the bar area, and a headless horseman believed to be a Parliamentary soldier from the English Civil War who rides across the nearby bridge at midnight.
The Giggling Woman: A prominent spirit described as a young woman in a white dress, whose presence is marked by soft, feminine laughter heard throughout the inn. She has been reported in the bar area (particularly when business slows down at night), guest rooms, and hallways. Guests have experienced her sitting on their beds, causing a noticeable depression in the mattress, and awakening them with her characteristic giggling. Local theory suggests she was the daughter of a former owner who drowned in the River Exe, explaining her benevolent attachment to the inn.
The Headless Horseman: Associated with the nearby Grade II listed Bickleigh Bridge (early 17th century), this apparition is believed to be a Parliamentary soldier who lost his head during the English Civil War siege of Bickleigh Castle. He rides across the bridge at midnight, particularly on Midsummer's Eve, as a dark figure carrying his severed head under one arm. The thundering hooves often precede any visual manifestation, with witnesses reporting the unmistakable rhythm of a galloping horse crossing the ancient stones.
