The most unsettling of these was the sound of someone being choked to death, followed by a woman's blood-curdling scream. These eerie events have left many wondering if the polytechnic is haunted by a malevolent spirit.

Red stone close to Kilburn Priory, NW6

Near Kilburn Priory, a small red stone marks the spot where St. Gervase met his untimely demise. According to legend, Gervase was brutally killed by his brother Stephen, who had grown obsessed with Gervase's wife. The stone on which Gervase's body fell turned a deep shade of red, as if stained with his blood. This eerie phenomenon was said to have forced Stephen to confess to his heinous crime. The red stone remained a grim reminder of the tragic event for decades afterwards.

Channelsea Depot, E15

Channelsea Depot in Stratford, London, is home to a rather unsettling apparition known as the Grinning Man. This eerie figure was first spotted back in June 1994 by a former British Rail employee who was working in the area. The witness reported seeing a tall man dressed in a cape and top hat, standing by a hangar with a mouth full of white teeth twisted into a terrible grin. The encounter was brief, as the Grinning Man vanished into thin air, leaving the witness feeling very cold and apprehensive.

Magistrates Court, E1

The Magistrates Court on Aylward Street in London's East End is said to be haunted by the ghost of Lillian Brown, a former employee who still walks the corridors where she worked back in the 1970s. It's a curious case, really - no one seems to know much about Mrs Brown's life or what she did at the court, but her presence has been felt by many over the years. Some say she's a benign spirit, just going about her business as if she's still alive.

Theatre Royal, E15

Theatre Royal in London's E15 is home to a rather charming ghost. Freddy Fredericks, the theatre's builder, is said to look after the building from beyond the grave. He's often spotted walking around at midnight, a small, tubby man dressed in brown, radiating friendliness. His presence is so well-documented that he's even been caught on camera at least once. It's said that as long as his initials remain painted on an archway, the theatre will continue to stand.

Hollow Ponds area, E11

Deep in Epping Forest, near Hollow Ponds, a strange encounter took place on an evening fishing trip in November 2008. Michael Kent reported seeing a dark, hairy figure standing around four foot tall. The creature vanished into the bushes, leaving Kent with a rather unsettling experience. This part of Epping Forest is known for its dense foliage and tranquil atmosphere, making it the perfect setting for a mysterious encounter.
