The Abbot of Croxden Haunting
Checkley Church and churchyard, Checkley
Checkley Church and its surrounding churchyard are said to be haunted by the ghost of the Abbot of Croxden. In the 1930s, a cowled figure was seen standing at the altar of the church. Interestingly, when this entity was felt to be present outside in the churchyard, it was not seen but rather sensed by those who encountered it. The vicar, having observed the entity, thought it could be the Abbot of Croxden who was buried within the building. This connection to a historical figure adds a layer of intrigue to the haunting.
